Why start teaching kids about money management at a young age?

The Massachusetts Task Force on Financial Literacy recommended that every student K-12 receive financial education each year. Like any skill, habits around money management form early on. Introducing kids to basic concepts such as earning, saving, spending and giving, allows them to begin to appreciate the different decisions people make around money. In the process, students develop important behaviors, such as setting long-term goals and delaying gratification, which in turn helps them make good choices with money.

How difficult is the math used in Dollar Scholars classes?

Our goal is to ensure that each student feels comfortable with the math used in class and learns how important math skills are when dealing with money. We base our math concepts on the common core curriculum for grades 3-6. The math covered is mainly addition, subtraction and division. The math is done as a class or with the help of a teacher. We want students to feel confident when using math and managing money.

How many students are in a class?

We cap class size at 12 students in order to allow for meaningful discussions, collaboration among the students, and a level of participation that benefits the class as a whole.

What grade should students be in to take this class?

Our curriculum is designed for grades 3-6.

Is there homework for the classes?

No. That being said, we find students want to bring in their own business materials, such as business cards and flyers. Students often create drawings based on the concepts covered in class. We encourage students to present any such work. We find this voluntary participation inspires more creativity from others and helps the class further understand the lessons covered.

Does my child need any materials for class?

No. We provide each child with a folder, in which they will keep their weekly work. At the end of the session, folders are sent home to parents.

What if there's a snow day?

We will add a class at the end of the session to make up for any such missed class due to a snow day. The class will be held on the same day of the week as it was for the session and at the same time.

Are there make-up classes if my child misses a class?

Given the progression of the lessons and the high level of participation, we do not offer make-up classes. Should your child need to miss a class, please let us know and we will do our best to catch up your child on the lesson missed and provide materials pertaining to such lesson.

What is your refund policy after a child has registered for the class?

Where we offer only 12 spots per class, classes fill up quickly. Therefore, we do not offer a refund unless we can fill your child's spot before the session begins. In those incidents, we charge a $35 transfer fee and refund the remainder of the session cost.

Can my child bring a snack to class?

Yes. We ask that all snacks be nut free.

How do you handle allergies?

We ask that students bring in nut free snacks. If your child has an allergy or other health concern, please inform us. Otherwise, we will assume your child has no allergies or health concerns.

How are student behavioral issues handled?

It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.
